The drawing, Mother and Daughter, was created following a discussion
with two friends: Joanne MacDonald, an events coordinator, and Rochelle
Greenberg, a mother, grandmother, and cancer survivor. Rochelle
and her husband David are the founders of An Evening with Abigail.
In a search for a symbolic art piece that would enhance the An
Evening with Abigail event, we talked of the generational impact
of cancer on families. Suddenly, this cold fact became an image
and a raison d'être for solidarity in the fight against cancer.
Breast cancer is a generational disease. It affects grandmothers
and mothers, their daughters, and eventually their grand-daughters.
As much as finding a cure for cancer may be personal, it is even
more so a generational affliction -- an attack on those we hold
most dear.
